Scottish company Advanced Pest Solutions (APS) have created a new iPhone application aimed at British holiday-makers, The Midge App.
The free app is linked to APS’s national midge forecast, which runs during the summer, meaning users can see the midge threat in their area on a five-point scale.
The company’s Dr Alison Blackwell suggested that the insect could hatch in large numbers in the next week following a spell of hot weather. She said: “I have a feeling we may be seeing quite a lot this year. Midges like warm and wet weather.” Freezing temperatures earlier this year were believed to have killed off a “proportion” of Scotland’s midge population, and larvae spending winter a few centimetres below ground would have been vulnerable to a prolonged cold spell.
However, Dr Blackwell said that most of the trillions of midges in Scotland would likely have survived.
The app is to be released this week.
