Email phishing scam targeting Vodafone customers

A couple of our clients have contacted us at Veecom asking about an email sent to them by Vodafone.

As many of you will be aware already, there have been loads of email scams going around over the last few years, and if you are a Vodafone customer, this is worth being aware of to ensure that you don’t become a victim of identity theft (or worse!).

The email looks like this:

Phishing scams tend to have a few tell-tale signs, such as spelling errors, not addressing you by your full name, and vague information.

How to tell if an email is a phishing scam:

  • The email above, for example, is sent to ‘valued customer’ – legitimate emails should address you by name.
  • It’s a little technical, but you can see if the URL in the link you are asked to click doesn’t point to the company’s website directly, it’s possible that is is a scam – the link in this scam email, for example, points to the Czech Republic.
  • Spelling – many scammers operate in a second language so the spelling and grammar is often (but not always) poor.

The best thing to do is generally be aware that these scams exist and use your best judgement, and if you’re not sure about an email you have been sent, you can always contact the company directly and ask.
